To this end, various antifreezes have been formulated to try to combat these problems with different aims and different levels of success. Namely, it freezes in low temperatures, boils at a relatively low temperature, and often speeds rust & corrosion in mechanical parts. Now, water’s great at taking on heat and giving heat off, but it also has some undesirable properties when it comes to cooling mechanics. The old style blue, green and orange have a life of 2 years. The orange coolant contains carboxylates which prevent the buildup of corrosion on the engine. Unlike other coolants, the orange antifreeze is specially formulated for modern cars that feature more aluminum in their system. The two antifreeze types are not chemically compatible. Red is a whole different mixture and if you mix with blue, green or orange you will get sludge and knacker your cooling system. It offers all-year antifreeze protection. You’ll often hear of high-tech things being “liquid cooled” – which sounds super fancy but is actually just a case of pumping water-based coolant through pipes in order to warm the water up and take that heat away from the thing you want to cool. You should not mix green (IAT) type coolant and orange/pink (OAT) type coolant. But in rare cases, we might come across a deep green OAT coolant (Honda manufactures dark green OAT coolant). They should really be called “engine regulant” or something official-sounding like that because their job is twofold: to stop engines getting too hot in the summer, and to stop them getting too cold in the winter. HOAT Hybrid Organic Acid Technology Providing the benefits of both IAT and OAT coolants, HOAT coolants are primarily orange and yellow and are common in Chrysler and Ford vehicles. But different coolant/antifreeze manufacturers now use different colours for. ![]() While they often go by different names, antifreeze and engine coolant are the same thing. Usually orange, yellow, red or purple, OAT coolants are typically changed every five years or 50,000 miles. GM DEX-COOL and Ford Mercon are red or orange, depending how you look at them.
